shopping

By Hristina Kostadinova, Business Analyst Intern @ Enhanced Retail Solutions LLC

When I accepted my internship at ERS, I knew very little about the retail industry beyond shopping. I had never worked with inventory planning tools or large-scale retail data before, so stepping into this environment felt both exciting and intimidating. Very quickly I realized this internship would challenge me in the best way possible. It has completely changed how I think about retail and inventory management.

At first, I assumed the most difficult part of retail analytics would be building forecasting tools and managing large amounts of data. What surprised me is the real challenge is interpreting the data and understanding the story behind it. Every number reflects a business decision. They explain why products are performing well or struggle. Inventory decisions influence efficiency, profitability, and long term planning. I quickly learned that retail is not just about analyzing numbers on a screen, but about using data to make thoughtful and informed decisions.

Automation and Efficiency

One of the things that impressed me most about ERS was its use of automation to improve efficiency across its operations. Coming from a STEM background, I found it fascinating to see how the company has streamlined complex processes that would otherwise require significant manual effort. Tasks that may have once taken hours can now be completed in minutes through automation and process optimization. This not only improves efficiency but also allows the team to focus more on higher level analysis, strategic decision making, and delivering value to clients.

Semantic Models and Data Connections

Another aspect I found quite fascinating was ERS’s use of semantic models within its data infrastructure. I learned how multiple streams of information, including POS sales data, product attributes, inventory data, and marketing data, are integrated into a centralized data structure that allows the team to analyze each client’s business more effectively. Seeing how all of these systems connect gave me a much deeper appreciation for the complexity behind retail analytics and inventory planning. It showed me how businesses can transform massive amounts of raw data into meaningful insights that support inventory forecasting and inventory health analysis.

Client Relationships

What became apparent to me during my first week was how much ERS prioritizes building genuine, long-term partnerships with its clients. Many of these relationships have lasted for years, which reflects the level of trust and value ERS provides. It is clear the company genuinely cares about helping its clients succeed and works closely with them to give them a good idea of their inventory health, helping them make more informed and strategic business decisions.

Closing Thoughts

After the first week, this experience has shown me how much strategy, collaboration, and analytical thinking go into running a successful business. There is an incredible amount happening behind the scenes that most consumers never see. Being exposed to the decision making process behind inventory planning, forecasting, and retail operations has given me a completely new perspective on the industry. It has made me even more excited to continue learning about the world of retail analytics.
