Retail Analytics, POS analysis, inventory planning

Turning Weekend Sales Data Into Strategic Action

This summer, as I began my role as a Business Analyst Intern at ERS, I quickly learned that retail moves far faster than most consumers realize. By Monday morning, analysts are already reviewing seven days of point-of-sale (POS) data from major retailers, knowing that within hours, those insights will influence inventory decisions worth hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Open to Buy

During my first week, our team started work on converting a spreadsheet based Open-to-Buy (OTB) calculator to a more dynamic and intelligent solution. It uses ERS’ powerful backend platform to handle the logic and Microsoft Power BI to visualize it. It integrates budget, forecasts, actualized sales and retail and wholesale inventory data into a dynamic decision-making tool. The solution was designed to provide real-time visibility into inventory position and dollars open for future purchases. It enables retail and wholesale planners to model different scenarios and immediately see how those decisions would impact future inventory and purchasing capacity.

The Power Behind Retail Analytics

Retail analytics is far more than tracking sales; it is understanding what those numbers reveal about customer behavior, inventory health, and future demand. One of the most valuable lessons I learned was the importance of distinguishing between meaningful trends and temporary anomalies. A sudden spike in sales may look encouraging at first, but when that momentum doesn’t continue over several weeks, it usually reflects short‑term hype instead of true demand. In retail, reacting too quickly to noise can result in costly overstock, excess markdowns, and missed opportunities elsewhere.

Beyond the Spreadsheet

My experience at ERS has shown me that the most impactful analytics are not always the most complex. The real value lies in delivering insights quickly, clearly, and in a way decision-makers can act on immediately. In retail, speed matters. Every Monday morning (or whatever cadence you choose), the team analyzes fresh data to shape which products reach shelves weeks or even months later. Data, collaboration, and strategic thinking drive every promotion, pricing move, and stocked shelf.
